Liver is one of the essential and most significant organs of the body responsible for the detoxification, metabolism, digestion and well-being of the body. It is commonly known as the body’s natural filter. Good liver health is important for your overall health and keeping your liver working well is essential for a balanced and healthy life. However, it’s important to understand the liver’s natural detox process, what things may be impacting the ability of your liver to function optimally, and how to support your liver naturally.
The liver metabolizes toxins and waste, processing everything we consume, from food and drinks to drugs and environmental toxins.
Phase1(Oxidation):In this step, liver enzymes convert toxins into smaller, less harmful compounds. This reaction may create free radicals, highly neutral molecules that can cause cellular damage, if not neutralized.
Phase2(Conjugation):In this phase, the liver attaches the Phase 1 toxins to other molecules, making them water-soluble, which gets removed via kidneys or bile.
Diet: Processed food/high sugar/high fat diet adds stress on liver. Also drinking excessive alcohol and caffeine can also destroy liver cells, hindering detoxification process.
Chronic Alcohol Use: Drinking excess is among the top causes of liver damage. Chronic alcohol use can cause fatty liver disease, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis over time. Also it impedes the liver’s ability to filter and remove toxins.
Environmental Toxins: The air, water and chemicals that we expose in our daily lives can also affect liver function. Pesticides, industrial pollutants, household cleaning products and even cosmetics can host harmful substances into the body affecting liver function.
Medications: Some medications like painkillers, statins, and antibiotics, especially when taken excess, can add stress to liver.
Liver Diseases: Conditions such as hepatitis, cirrhosis and liver cancer can directly damage the liver's function. Viral infections like hepatitis B and C can cause long-term liver inflammation, leading to liver failure incase untreated.
